SIM Application Toolkit (STK) and Java Cards Development Experience

Now, in 2009 in USA it is almost impossible to find simple mobile devices which do not support Java, but in the fast growing GSM markets (Asia, Latin America) where simple devices are still very popular, it is very important to provide value-added services on simple devices.

The SIM Application Toolkit GSM standard allows to program and integrate a set of commands directly into a SIM card. This way the SIM card gives direct commands to any device and can, for example, make it show simple menus or request data input from the user.

Combining STK standard with Java Card technology facilitates integration of simple Java applications directly into SIM cards. Thus subscribers with very simple mobile devices can use value-added services, and it is also available to update application over the air (depending on device manufactures).

We have used a Java Card technology to program SIM cards and provide users with a simple Java application that allows access to the international money transfer gateway from any mobile device.

Basically, the Java Card technology can also be used for ATM plastic cards. For example, simple Java applet integrated into the card could initiate custom menu based application run with ATM, keep money directly on plastic card, providing new and secure level of service for banking industry.
