New Functionality Development and Refactoring for BOSS

In 2007 Azoft signed a sub-contract for an advanced and complex project implementation for a world’s leading Billing, CRM, and OSS systems for WiMAX and broadband service provider, who was among the first companies to develop real-time, web-based billing, and credit card processing solutions to provide even more quality service to its customers.

In order to accelerate the development of new software functionalities of its back office support system (BOSS), the customer decided to outsource the development part to Azoft.
 

The Scope

To develop new and refactor existing functionality for customer’s back office support system.

Customer’s fully web-enabled system was designed to support WiMAX and broadband service providers in managing the entire customer lifecycle through a single consolidated interface.

The high-speed wireless broadband services provider was in need of urgent new functionality development accounted for three important steps: the fact of natural striving to provide even more quality and effective customer service, the need to boost the capitalization growth in the Wall Street before joining a WiMAX development alliance, and selling a share to strategic investors such as Intel and Google.
 

The Challenge

The main impeding factor within the project was the full involvement of the customer’s IT team in time-taking and labor-consuming system design processes and activities on new requirements documentation.

Since the BOSS presented a unique solution, a limited number of engineers had a profound understanding of the system and all of them were involved in new requirements design phase, customer’s engineering resources were insufficient for the highly-intensive development process required by the business.

All factors together drove the customer to an outsourcing business model allowing to meet the goal of boosting the development of new functionalities.

Among the teams from Romania, Ukraine, Vietnam, and Russia, including the team of Azoft, chosen on a competitive basis, the customer distributed different projects and the documentation specifying the complex software development process and new requirements of the functionalities to be developed.
 

The Solution

Before the official plunge into project, the team of Azoft took the challenge and without any assistance mastered several training programs related to the required software development process. What is more the team made themselves familiar with the product’s architecture, adopted patterns and requirements developed by the customer’s team for coding, deployment, testing, and QA procedures on such a scale, which allowed for full participation and effective suggestions offering.

Basing confidently on the tripod of responsibility, professionalism, and flexibility of approaches, Azoft was able to rapidly grasp the essence of the process and get into it, to implement successfully the first outsourced project and pass the code review stages, and then pick up the dropped by another team flag and save the project handed over.

Azoft’s participation within the project was initiated by its development partner, whose analytics and mangers worked onsite together with Azoft’s engineers. Taking into account the risks and specificities of subcontract development, both teams had to work out a collaboration model based on full seamless integration of Azoft’s team into the structure of its development partner.

Both the collaboration model developed and general responsibility made it possible to eliminate all the subcontract risks and eventually work together with customer’s representatives here in Russia without direct mediation and assistance from the development partner.
 

The Outcome

Intensive integration with the customer and ability to provide quality services both on-site and off-site, made it possible for Azoft’s engineers to handle the first complex and challenging task within stipulated time and budget, meeting all the specific requirements set by the customer.

Today, more than 1.5-year experience of deep collaboration and profound understanding of customer’s system allow Azoft to work successfully on several subsystems of BOSS at the same time.

Mutual understanding and confidence attained made it possible for Azoft’s specialists to participate onsite in design phases of new projects and functionality, also leveraging part of complex documenting and QA processes implemented onsite.
