Use of Drupal CMS for Development of Social-Networking Community

The Client

Our client is Recipe Diva Company – a firm that provides access to culinary recipes to the community.

The Scope

To create a culinary recipes web portal, where users could use a recipe database, add new recipes through friendly interface, share recipes, discuss them with other users on a forum, leave comments, create groups by interests and more.

The Challenge

Lots of functionalities that were not used before, extremely short time for development.

The Solution

An analysis of available CMS tools has shown that Drupal will be the best among others: it is easy to learn and use, it has many modules that can be used as is or may need some modifications. Naturally, with our experience we would be able to create the site from zero, but it would take us five times more resources and time.

Drupal is a flexible PHP-based CMS system with many modules for advanced search functionalities, user profiles, blogs, books, comments, forums, and polls, caching and feature throttling for improved performance under load, multi-level menu system, multi-user content creation and editing, RSS Feed and Feed aggregation, security/new release update notification, access control restrictions (by IP addresses, e-mail, etc), and workflow tools (Triggers and Actions).

A significant plus of Drupal open source realization is that the standard or third-party modules can be fine-tuned or even significantly modified to better reflect customers requirements. For this project two modules were extensively modified (Favorite Notes and Hierarchical Select), ad one core module (Recipe Diva Module) had to be written from scratch. To do this we had to scrutinize Drupal API, even learning undocumented features.

The Outcome

The customer got a completely functional, robust, stable web-site in very limited time and within the budget. Azoft company specialists got additional experience in use of Drupal for web-development and are now ready to work with projects of any complexity.
